Kia has officially launched its high-performance EV9 GT in South Korea, introducing a powerful new chapter in the company’s electric vehicle (EV) lineup. This enhanced version of Kia’s flagship electric SUV combines exceptional performance metrics with luxury features, all while maintaining a surprisingly competitive price point.

Powerful Performance and Enhanced Powertrain

The EV9 GT delivers a substantial performance upgrade over the standard model, featuring a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that delivers 509 horsepower (374 kW) and 740 Nm of torque. This powertrain enables the three-row SUV to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, marking a significant improvement over the current GT-Line trim’s 5-second acceleration time.

Powered by Kia’s fourth-generation 99.8 kWh battery, the EV9 GT achieves a range of 408 km (253 miles) on the Korean testing cycle. While this represents a slight reduction from the standard model’s range due to its performance orientation, it still offers practical everyday usability for most drivers.

The vehicle’s engineering goes beyond raw power, incorporating sophisticated technology to enhance the driving experience. For the first time in a Kia SUV, the GT features an electronic suspension system that actively adapts to road conditions, ensuring both sporty handling and comfortable cruising. An electronic limited-slip differential (e-LSD) actively manages power distribution to the wheels, providing enhanced control and stability during dynamic driving.

Distinctive Design Elements for the GT Variant

In terms of design, the GT distinguishes itself with several performance-oriented design elements. The exterior features active air flaps on the front bumper, GT-specific 21-inch alloy wheels, and eye-catching neon brake calipers. A blacked-out roof rack adds to the sporty aesthetic while maintaining practicality.

The interior receives equally meaningful upgrades, including Alcantara sports seats with suede seat backs in the front row, second-row “relaxation seats,” and power-reclining third-row seats. A premium Meridian sound system and augmented reality navigation system enhance the luxury quotient. One of the most interesting features is the EV-Active Sound Design (e-ASD), which, coupled with a virtual gear shift system, simulates the experience of traditional gear changes, adding an engaging element to the electric driving experience.

Pricing and Global Availability

In terms of pricing, the EV9 GT has launched in South Korea at 88.49 million won (around $61,500). While this represents a premium over the standard EV9, it remains competitively priced within the high-performance luxury SUV segment. However, unlike other EV9 models, the GT variant will not qualify for government subsidies due to its performance-oriented nature.

The global rollout of the EV9 GT will continue throughout the year, with launches planned for North America, Europe, and other markets. In the United States (U.S.), where the current top-spec EV9 GT-Line starts at $73,900, the GT model is expected to be priced around $80,000. It’s worth noting that U.S. models will feature the North American Charging Standard port, though they won’t qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit as the vehicle is manufactured at Kia’s AutoLand Gwangmyeong plant in South Korea.

As the global rollout continues, the EV9 GT arrives as an exciting moment for Kia as the model aims to capture attention with its powerful performance, sophisticated technology, and dynamic design while offering a high-performance alternative in the electric SUV market.
