Volkswagen ID. Buzz (Image: Volkswagen)

Volkswagen ID. Buzz

MSRP: $59,995

Key Strength: It’s currently the only electric passenger van you can buy in the U.S.

The ID. Buzz is a top pick for families seeking an electric vehicle. Its van-style design offers easy access to the second and third rows via sliding doors, along with generous space for passengers and cargo, perfect for making family trips more enjoyable. However, with an EPA-estimated range of up to 234 miles, it may not be ideal for long journeys without stops to recharge.

In the U.S., the ID. Buzz is available in three main trims: Pro S, Pro S Plus, and Pro S Plus with 4MOTION. Each comes standard with an extended wheelbase, a total passenger volume of 160.1 ft³, and the option of 6- or 7-seat layouts. And it’s not just a great family EV — it has broader appeal.

Hyundai IONIQ 9 and Kia EV9 (Image: EV.com)

Kia EV9/Hyundai IONIQ 9

MSRP: $54,900 (Kia), $58,955 (Hyundai)

Key Strength: Two styles, one heart: choose between completely different-looking family SUVs that share nearly identical specs.

If you’re looking for a spacious EV packed with advanced tech at a competitive price, the Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ 9 are both strong contenders for family life. Their 800V platforms allow ultra-fast DC charging, and starting in 2025, both will come with a NACS port for seamless access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. There are some key differences, though.

The EV9 has been available since 2023, so it offers more trims, including a Standard Range model with a smaller battery and a performance GT version coming soon, expected to hit 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. The IONIQ 9 counters with best-in-class space: up to 163.4 ft³ of passenger volume in a seven-seat setup, compared to the EV9’s 158.8 ft³. Even better, both models are assembled in the U.S. — IONIQ 9 included.

Cadillac Vistiq (Image: MotorTrend)

Cadillac Vistiq

MSRP: $77,395

Key Strength: Escalade vibes in a smaller, electric, family-friendly package.

Cadillac aimed to merge all-electric luxury with family practicality and with the Vistiq, it looks like they’ve pulled it off. Currently offered with a 102 kWh battery and dual-motor setup, the specs are already impressive: 3.7 seconds to 60 mph in a 7-seat SUV, available air suspension, an optional powerful 19.2 kW onboard charger, and active rear steering for tight spaces. Add premium interior materials and a bold American design, and you get one of the most compelling electric SUVs on the market… almost.

On the downside, peak DC charging tops out at 190 kW, and there’s no NACS port yet. Still, with 43 ft³ of cargo space behind the second row, it’s more than ready to handle day-to-day family needs.

Lucid Gravity (Image: Lucid)

Lucid Gravity

MSRP: $94,900

Key Strength: Longest-range electric SUV in its class.

Gravity is Lucid’s latest newcomer and it’s already setting new benchmarks. How about 450 miles of range on a single charge wrapped in the body of a spacious family SUV? Lucid has a way of making the impossible real, though this model hasn’t been tested by the EPA yet. But range isn’t the only standout feature. Built on a unique 900V architecture, it supports charging speeds up to 350 kW, making it a top pick for long-distance family travel.

The only thing that might keep this exceptional SUV out of reach is its price. Hopefully, Lucid will launch new trims soon to make it more affordable, while still offering an impressive 120 ft³ of cargo space and up to 6,000 lbs of towing capacity.

Volvo EX90 (Image: Volvo)

Volvo EX90

MSRP: $81,290

Key Strength: Volvo’s flagship model featuring advanced V2X connectivity.

The Volvo EX90 strikes a perfect balance between cutting-edge safety tech and family-friendly practicality. As Volvo’s flagship SUV, it features full V2X capability, potentially allowing you to power your home or even feed energy back to the grid in the future. It also delivers a respectable 300 miles of EPA-estimated range and supports DC fast charging at speeds up to 250 kW.

The only drawback may be the price, especially since the base Single Motor trim isn’t yet available in the U.S. Still, the high-quality materials and exceptional build finish help justify the cost.
