Hyundai IONIQ 5 Breaks Records: Greatest Altitude Change For An EV

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 has secured its place in the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS by achieving the greatest altitude change ever recorded by an electric vehicle (EV), setting a new benchmark in EV performance while also providing proof of how far EV technology has evolved to handle extreme conditions.

A Journey of Epic Proportions

The record-breaking journey, which spanned more than 4,900 km (around 3,044 miles) across India’s diverse landscape, saw the IONIQ 5 navigate an astounding altitude change of 5,802 meters (around 19,035 feet). The expedition began at Umling La in Ladakh, recognized as the world’s highest driveable road at 5,799 meters (around 19025 feet) above sea level, and concluded in Kuttanad, Kerala, which sits three meters below sea level. 

In addition, this comprehensive test of the IONIQ 5’s capabilities unfolded over 14 days, subjecting the electric SUV to some of the most challenging conditions an automobile can face.

Engineering Excellence and Innovation

Notably, this achievement is particularly noteworthy is the range of environmental challenges the IONIQ 5 had to overcome. The vehicle displayed great adaptability, transitioning from the freezing temperatures and thin air of the Himalayan mountain passes to the humid coastal conditions of southern India. This versatility was made possible by the vehicle’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) and its substantial 72.6 kWh battery system.

The timing of this record is particularly meaningful as Hyundai prepares to launch the upgraded 2025 IONIQ 5 in the United States (U.S.) market. The new model promises even more notable capabilities, featuring an enlarged 84 kWh battery that extends its EPA-estimated range to 318 miles, up from the current model’s 303 miles. The refreshed version will also include an NACS charging port, allowing access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, and will be manufactured at Hyundai’s new Georgia plant.

Expanding the EV Lineup

This record-setting achievement comes at a pivotal moment for Hyundai’s EV program. The company is expanding its electric lineup by introducing the IONIQ 9, its first three-row electric SUV. This larger vehicle is equipped with a 110.2 kWh battery and is capable of an EPA-estimated range of 335 miles.

The successful completion of this challenging journey, organized by Hyundai Motor India Limited and executed by a professional team from Evo India, indicates that modern EVs can not only match but potentially exceed the abilities of traditional combustion engine vehicles in extreme conditions.
