Hyundai Unlocks Tesla Superchargers For EV Owners With Free NACS Adapters

Hyundai has announced a comprehensive program to provide free North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters to its electric vehicle (EV) owners, enabling them to access Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network across the United States (U.S.).

Expanding Charging Accessibility

The initiative, set to launch in Q1 2025, represents a strategic effort to address one of the primary concerns in EV adoption: charging accessibility. By providing these adapters, Hyundai is opening up access to more than 20,000 Tesla Supercharger stations for its customers, substantially expanding its charging options.

As a result, when combined with existing Combined Charging System (CCS) infrastructure, Hyundai EV drivers will have access to over 38,000 DC fast chargers nationwide.

Inclusive Program for All Owners

The program’s scope is notably inclusive, covering both current and future Hyundai EV owners. Eligible vehicles include the 2024 and earlier models of the KONA Electric, IONIQ hatchback, IONIQ 5, and IONIQ 6, as well as their 2025 counterparts.

Moreover, the company has streamlined the process for obtaining the adapter, allowing owners to request it directly through the MyHyundai owner portal, with shipping costs included in the complimentary offer.

Olabisi Boyle, senior vice president of product planning and mobility strategy at Hyundai Motor North America, emphasized the customer-centric approach behind this initiative: “To accelerate EV adoption, we started by listening to our current owners. These adapters will make DC fast-charging more convenient for current owners.”

Boyle further explained that the combination of NACS ports on new models like the upcoming IONIQ 9 and improvements to their digital charging ecosystem will enhance the overall customer experience for future EV drivers.

A Milestone for Hyundai EVs

The timing of this announcement is particularly strategic, as Hyundai comes off a record-breaking November in U.S. sales, with IONIQ 5 sales more than doubling. The company’s luxury brand, Genesis, will also participate in the adapter program, with specific details to be announced in early 2024.

Notably, this adapter program also coincides with Hyundai’s broader evolution in EV manufacturing. The 2025 IONIQ 5 has achieved a milestone by becoming the first non-Tesla vehicle available for purchase with a factory-installed NACS port. Starting at $43,975, the latest model offers various configurations including a Standard Range version with 245 miles of EPA-estimated range and an Extended Range option capable of traveling up to 318 miles on a single charge.

For current and prospective Hyundai EV owners, detailed instructions and terms and conditions for claiming the complimentary adapter will be released in 2025 through the company’s website and additional customer communication channels.
