The 2024 awards showcase remarkable diversity in eco-friendly automotive innovation, with eight vehicles from manufacturers across China, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States (U.S.) setting new environmental benchmarks. Hyundai made a particularly strong showing, securing two positions in the top rankings with its IONIQ 6 First Edition Electric in the Large Family Car category and the KONA Electric in the Small SUV segment.

Notably, Opel/Vauxhall Corsa Electric emerged as both the Best-Performing Full Electric Car and the year’s highest overall achiever. While EVs dominated the rankings, Green NCAP’s evaluation system acknowledges excellence across all powertrain types with Peugeot, Volkswagen, and Honda being winners in their respective categories.

Moreover, the Chinese automotive industry made its mark with BYD’s DOLPHIN Design Electric winning the Small Family Car category, while Jeep’s Avenger Summit Electric topped the Small MPV segment. These victories reflect the growing global competition in sustainable vehicle development.

Dr. Aleksandar Damyanov, Technical Manager at Green NCAP, emphasized the comprehensive nature of their evaluation process stating, “We hope today’s results will help buyers make clearer decisions concerning the environmental impact of a wide range of cars available on the market in 2024.”

Green NCAP’s Life Cycle Assessments

In addition, Damyanov also announced upcoming enhancements to their rating system, which will incorporate Life Cycle Assessments to provide deeper insights into various aspects of vehicle performance, including charging behavior, cold weather operation, driving range, and energy efficiency.

The organization’s evaluation methodology requires a minimum of three vehicles tested per category, ensuring fair comparisons using uniform criteria within each calendar year. Winners are determined through a balanced assessment of three key indices – Clean Air, Energy Efficiency, and Greenhouse Gases – with each factor contributing equally to the final score.

Furthermore, Green NCAP’s planned introduction of Life Cycle Assessments later this year signals an evolution in environmental vehicle evaluation, promising to offer consumers even more comprehensive information about the true environmental impact of their vehicle choices.

As per the results, this development acknowledges that while EVs often lead to environmental performance, continuous improvement across all powertrain types remains crucial for reducing the automotive industry’s overall environmental impact.
