In a bold move to reinvigorate its premium electric vehicle (EV) sales, Tesla has reintroduced a long-abandoned incentive that promises to capture the attention of potential buyers and industry observers alike: free Supercharging for life on the Model S.

The Incentive: Free Supercharging Reimagined

Tesla introduced a compelling new promotion: free Supercharging for new Model S buyers, valid for as long as they own the vehicle. However, this offer differs significantly from the unlimited lifetime benefit once available in Tesla’s early days.

The updated version comes with specific limitations: it is tied to the original owner’s Tesla account, cannot be transferred to a new owner, excludes commercial or business use, and may be revoked for “excessive charging.” Importantly, this incentive applies only to new Model S purchases.

Moreover, Tesla is adding even more value for new Model S buyers by including three months of complimentary Supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) software and offering a free upgrade option for FSD on the Model S AWD.

Alongside this incentive, Tesla has implemented a $5,000 price increase for the Model S, raising its cost to $79,990 for the Long Range AWD version and $94,990 for the Plaid variant. This combination of a price hike with a free Supercharging perk reflects a nuanced strategy to enhance the appeal of the Model S through added value while maintaining its positioning as a premium vehicle.

Context and Global Availability

The return to free Supercharging is not entirely unprecedented. Tesla originally offered this benefit when the Model S launched in 2012, phasing it out in 2017 due to network sustainability concerns. Since then, the company has occasionally used limited-time Supercharging promotions to stimulate sales.

Furthermore, the promotion is currently limited to the United States (U.S.). Canadian and Mexican buyers receive a more modest three months of free Supercharging.

As a result, the reintroduction of free Supercharging for the Model S demonstrates Tesla’s willingness to experiment with pricing and incentives to keep its premium models relevant while innovate its sales approach to maintain market share and customer interest.
