Geely is recalling 1,473 Polestar 4 electric vehicles in China due to a potential battery thermal runaway risk, marking another safety action tied to battery manufacturing inconsistencies.

The recall affects vehicles equipped with 86 kWh battery packs produced between November 2023 and May 2024, with replacements set to begin May 16.

Polestar 4 recall targets battery defect linked to thermal risk

The affected Polestar 4 units were found to have inconsistencies in high-voltage battery component manufacturing. According to Chinese regulators, this could lead to increased internal resistance over time, reducing performance and, in extreme cases, triggering thermal runaway.

Geely will oversee the recall through Polestar’s sales network, replacing defective battery modules free of charge, according to CNEV Post. Until repairs are completed, owners are advised to limit charging to 70% to reduce risk.

The recall underscores ongoing challenges in EV battery quality control, particularly as automakers scale production and integrate complex supply chains.

Battery concerns ripple across Geely brands and suppliers

This latest action follows a larger recall earlier this year involving Zeekr, another Geely-backed brand. Zeekr recalled more than 38,000 vehicles due to similar thermal runaway risks tied to battery systems.

The earlier issue was linked to a dispute with battery supplier Sunwoda, which resulted in a settlement agreement to share repair costs after Geely subsidiary Vremt sought significant financial compensation.

It remains unclear whether the Polestar 4 recall is directly connected to the same supplier or underlying issue. However, the timing highlights broader pressure on automakers to ensure battery reliability amid rapid EV expansion.

As battery safety continues to draw scrutiny, the recall reinforces the importance of manufacturing consistency and supplier oversight in the next phase of EV growth.
