Geely has revealed its latest offering in the electric vehicle (EV) market: the Galaxy E5 SUV. Launched under Geely’s EV-focused Galaxy brand, the E5 is standing out in the eyes of the EV industry with its competitive pricing and advanced features.

Built on Geely’s global intelligent new energy architecture (GEA), the Galaxy E5’s dimensions place it in the compact SUV category, measuring 4,615 mm in length, 1,901 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.

With only a starting price of just RMB 112,800 ($15,800), the Galaxy E5 is positioned to challenge established players in the affordable electric SUV segment. The EV model arrives in five trims, all featuring a single motor powertrain that delivers 160 kW (214 horsepower) of peak power and 320 Nm of torque, allowing for 0 to 60 mph acceleration in 6.9 seconds according to Geely.

The Galaxy E5 offers two battery options: a 49.52 kWh pack for the base models and a larger 60.22 kWh battery for higher trims. As for its range, the smaller battery provides 440 km (273 miles) of range and the larger pack extends that to 530 km (329 miles) based on the CLTC cycle.

Furthermore, these batteries utilize Geely’s new Aegis Short Blade Battery technology, which delivers an energy density of 192 Wh/kg and a life expectancy of up to 3,500 charge cycles. According to Geely, this translates to a potential lifespan of 1 million km (621,000 miles) with minimal impact on range.

Geely also announced it would share its core technology for safely unlocking hidden door handles in new energy vehicles (NEVs) with the entire industry. While initially launched in China, Geely has clear intentions to introduce the Galaxy E5 to global markets. This aligns with the company’s recent success in overseas sales, which saw a 67% year-on-year increase in the first half of 2024. However, challenges to introduce this EV model to certain markets with high tariff rates such as the United States (U.S.) will be more difficult.

The Galaxy E5 is now available for pre-order in China, with deliveries projected to start soon. As for its global rollout, specific markets and timelines have yet to be announced, but Geely’s emphasis on the E5’s international compliance suggests a broader launch is imminent as it meets regulatory requirements in 89 countries. With its affordable pricing, the Geely Galaxy E5 is certainly set to make an impact on the electric SUV market worldwide.
