The Partnership’s Secure Communication Framework Is Based On ISO 15118-2 And ISO 15118-20 Standards

In the realm of electric vehicle (EV) charging development, Emobi and Autocrypt have revealed the first United States (U.S.) based Plug & Charge ecosystem that is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) with aims to enhance convenience, security, and efficiency through machine learning technologies.
The partnership started back in June 2023, focusing on developing a secure communication framework for EVs and charging stations based on ISO 15118-2 and ISO 15118-20 standards. The result showed a sturdy Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) that leverages AI to address common issues in traditional Plug & Charge systems.
As for this new charging ecosystem, it allows EV owners to start charging simply by plugging in their EVs. Utilizing asymmetric encryption technology, EV chargers can automatically identify the model and securely process payment for the charging session. Interestingly, what sets this system apart is its U.S.-based headquarters to ensure compliance with local regulations and data security standards.
Notably, a significant feature of the new system is its intelligent error-handling capability. In detail, the AI-powered solution addresses edge cases in ISO 15118 standards, where this innovation aims to overcome challenges posed by evolving standards and edge cases. This enables EV automakers, charger operators, and e-mobility service providers to focus on product development without technical limitations.
Sean HJ Cho, President of Autocrypt North America, expressed the importance of security in EV charging infrastructure stating, “By combining our PKI technology with Emobi’s expertise in AI and machine learning, we are bringing a secure yet innovative Plug & Charge solution to market, creating an unrestricted charging environment that ensures convenience, precision, and security throughout the entire charging and payment processes.”
It is important to note that this ecosystem has been a collaborative effort beyond merely Emobi and Autocrypt. Throughout the process, Emobi collaborated closely with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory. As a result, this cooperation provides that findings from the ecosystem contribute to the National Charging Experience (ChargeX) Consortium.
As EV charging becomes more advanced, the U.S. recently revealed a historical $1.3 billion round of funding initiative to improve and expanding EV charging across the country. Both EV charging technology and additional funding will benefits each other in the U.S. charging ecosystem as more efforts are being made.
With this AI-powered Plug & Charge ecosystem symbolizing a major step forward in making EV charging more accessible, secure, and efficient, the current challenges in EV charging infrastructure are being addressed. With EV adoption being contributed through these partnerships, the transition to electric mobility will be further accelerated in the U.S. market.
