Vattenfall InCharge, the eMobility brand of Swedish energy supplier Vattenfall, has secured a major contract to install up to 22,000 additional electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the Dutch provinces of Brabant and Limburg.

In detail, the new tender will ramp up Vattenfall’s total number of public charging points in these two provinces from 37,000 to 59,000 as part of a broader initiative to support the Netherlands’ ongoing energy transition and meet the growing demand for EV charging infrastructure.

Fabian Hagmann, Head of E-Mobility at Vattenfall, expressed enthusiasm for the company’s selection stating, “We are honoured by the trust the Dutch provinces Brabant and Limburg have placed in us. Our proven public infrastructure track record demonstrates our reliability as a leading charging point operator in Europe.”

According to Vattenfall, the provinces have set high standards for the project emphasizing cybersecurity, price transparency, and user-friendliness. Moreover, the new charging stations will feature displays showing price and charging information. Notably, the installation of new charging points will be based on predicted usage patterns to guarantee optimal placement in areas with the highest charging demand.

Furthermore, a stand-out feature of Vattenfall’s charging stations is their support for grid-conscious charging. This approach enables matching charging capacity to available grid capacity, assisting in alleviating grid congestion. Also, Vattenfall can temporarily reduce the power output of charging stations during peak demand periods to contribute towards grid stability and maximize the use of sustainable electricity.

Vattenfall’s Growing Charging Network

Interestingly, this contract is Vattenfall InCharge’s third major public charging award within a year. The company previously won tenders for the Hague City Council for 5,400 charging points and the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region for 35,000 charging points, in partnership with two other operators.

With these projects, Vattenfall’s charging network across Sweden, the Netherlands, and Germany is set to expand to more than 1 Gigawatt, equivalent to 90,000 charging points.

In the Netherlands’ efforts to enhance EV charging infrastructure, the continuous initiatives to accelerate the country’s transition to electric mobility will be reflected in its EV market’s effort to success. Though specific timelines have not been disclosed, the expansion in Brabant and Limburg will be rolled out over the next few years.
