Chevrolet has introduced its Blazer EV.R NASCAR electric vehicle (EV) prototype ahead of the 2025 Daytona 500. The Blazer EV.R’s powertrain architecture illustrates the tremendous potential of electric motorsport, featuring three STARD UHP 6-Phase electric motors – one in the front and two in the rear – that can reach speeds of up to 15,000 rpm. This sophisticated drivetrain is powered by a 78-kilowatt-hour liquid-cooled battery, displaying how racing technology could influence future consumer vehicles.

Justin Allgaier, the 2024 NASCAR Xfinity Series Champion who tested the prototype, noted the significant adjustments required for drivers accustomed to traditional race cars. “I’m used to knowing my speed through gearing and listening to engine revs, so I had to totally change how I judge corner entry speed,” Allgaier explained, highlighting how regenerative braking affects cornering balance and overall driving dynamics.

In addition, the Blazer EV.R follows similar prototype unveilings from other manufacturers, including Ford’s Mustang Mach-E-inspired race car, suggesting a broader industry movement toward electrified motorsport. While NASCAR has not announced immediate plans for an electric racing series, these prototypes offer a glimpse of possibilities “years down the road,” according to series officials.

Furthermore, the 2025 Daytona 500 will mark a historic moment as the production Blazer EV SS becomes the first EV to pace “The Great American Race,” with actor Alan Ritchson serving as the honorary pace car driver. This milestone, coupled with the Blazer EV.R’s debut, demonstrates how EVs are beginning to integrate into even the most traditional aspects of American motorsport.

Brandon Thomas, NASCAR’s vice president of vehicle design, expressed enthusiasm about the prototype’s potential impact on fan engagement stating, “The result is a powerful, exciting vehicle that we believe fans will love when they see it at Daytona International Speedway.”
