BYD to Launch Ultra-Luxury U8 and U9 EVs in Europe Under Yangwang Badge

BYD is preparing to introduce its ultra-luxury Yangwang sub-brand to Europe, marking the first time a Chinese automaker has entered the region’s top-tier car market. 

Executive vice president Stella Li confirmed the move, noting that Yangwang’s U8 SUV and U9 electric supercar will be sold in Europe, with the U7 sedan and other models to follow.

Yangwang U8 and U9 set for European launch under BYD’s expansion strategy

Launched in China in early 2023, the Yangwang brand targets the ultra-luxury segment, offering high-performance EVs priced over RMB 1 million ($139,000), according to Autocar. The U8 debuted in September 2023, the U9 supercar followed in February 2024, and the U7 electric sedan joined the lineup in March 2025. 

All Yangwang models are based on BYD’s e4 platform and feature quad-motor drivetrains exceeding 1,000 horsepower. BYD aims to introduce Yangwang in Europe following the rollout of its Denza brand there early next year. Yangwang is expected to compete with the likes of Bentley in Europe’s ultra-luxury segment.

Cost challenges and tariffs could raise European pricing

Although pricing remains unconfirmed, Autocar notes that Yangwang’s entry into Europe will face added costs, including right-hand drive conversion and a 17% EU tariff on Chinese EVs. This suggests European buyers will likely pay a premium compared to prices in China. Despite this, BYD’s luxury sub-brand is still expected to undercut the prices of Europe’s top-tier luxury carmakers like Bentley.

Yangwang is seeing some momentum in China, with the BYD sub-brand selling sold 205 vehicles in the country in June. This number is comprised of 132 U7 units, 64 U8s, and 9 U9s, according to a CNEV Post report.
