BYD Launches M9 MPV in Mexico with 587-Mile Range

BYD has officially introduced the Xia MPV to the Mexican market, renaming the vehicle as the BYD M9 and pricing it at 979,800 pesos (approximately $52,180). This marks the Chinese automaker’s first hybrid multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) offering in Mexico as it seeks to expand its footprint in the region.

The M9’s debut in Mexico comes with a single available variant and features three-row, seven-seat capacity. It shares the same specifications as the Xia MPV offered in China, including a 5,145 mm length, 1,970 mm width, and 3,045 mm wheelbase. The vehicle features a combined NEDC range of 945 kilometers (587 miles), thanks to its fifth-generation DM hybrid system.

BYD’s Mexican country manager, Ray Zou, noted the launch was a key step in targeting the nation’s premium NEV market. The original Xia MPV was first launched in China on January 8, where it’s currently offered in four trims ranging from RMB 249,800 to RMB 309,800 (around $34,870 to $43,200). In June, the BYD Xia sold 5,018 units globally, pushing its cumulative sales to 47,785 units, according to CNEV Post.

BYD sales surge despite uncertainty over future Mexico factory

BYD continues to show strong momentum, delivering 382,585 new energy vehicles in June. Overseas sales reached 90,049 units, up 233.58% year-over-year.

Despite this growth, BYD has reportedly paused plans to build a major manufacturing plant in Mexico due to geopolitical uncertainty and shifting U.S. trade policy, according to Bloomberg. The decision casts doubt on BYD’s longer-term production strategy in North America even as its sales footprint expands.
