The small, affordable passed the milestone just 26 months after its 2023 launch in China.

BYD has reached a major production milestone with its Seagull compact electric vehicle, surpassing 1 million units just 14 months after its launch in April 2023 in China. To mark the occasion, the Chinese automaker unveiled a new variant of its most affordable EV, now priced at RMB 78,800 ($10,850). This expands the Seagull’s lineup amid strong domestic and international demand.
The latest Seagull variant offers a 405-kilometer CLTC-rated range, matching the model’s top-tier version but omitting features like panoramic imaging, dashcam, and sentinel mode to keep costs down. BYD continues to offer aggressive incentives for the vehicle, such as 0% down payment, interest-free financing, and up to RMB 24,000 ($3,300) in combined national and trade-in subsidies, according to CNEV Post.
Since its original RMB 73,800 ($10,300) debut, the Seagull has received multiple updates, including the Smart Driving Edition launched in early 2025. BYD’s strategy has helped the Seagull become the brand’s single best-selling model, with 60,131 units sold in May alone, accounting for 15.7% of BYD’s total sales that month.

In Europe, the Seagull is marketed as the Dolphin Surf, and it became BYD’s tenth model in the region after launching in 15 countries in May. The European version offers three range variants, priced between €22,990 ($26,940) for 322 kilometers and €24,990 for 507 kilometers.
Between January and May 2025, the Seagull sold 233,126 units globally, a 50% year-on-year increase. Cumulative sales stood at 992,637 units by the end of May, crossing the 1 million mark just weeks later.
