In the realm of electric vehicle (EV) technology, BMW in collaboration with Munich-based startup DeepDrive, is set to road-test a groundbreaking electric motor featuring dual rotor technology.

Aiming to deliver super-efficient and powerful drives with extended range, the move from the test rig to real-world validation in BMW EV models will be innovative. Moreover, the partnership facilitated through BMW’s Startup Garage program has been ongoing since IAA 2021. DeepDrive’s unique electric motor design effectively combines two electric motors into a single unit.

Unlike conventional motors where the stator moves either an internal or external rotor, DeepDrive’s concept drives both rotors simultaneously. This results in an energy-efficient drive with high torque density according to BMW.

Karol Virsik, Head of Research Vehicle Concepts and Technologies at BMW Group, expressed enthusiasm about the EV technology’s potential stating, “DeepDrive’s prototype parts largely exceeded our specifications. That’s really unusual at such an early stage and with a completely new technology.”

The compact and lightweight design of DeepDrive’s motor opens up possibilities for both in-wheel drive systems, where each wheel hub has its own motor, and traditional centralized drive systems. As a result, this versatility makes the technology potentially attractive for a wide range of EV models.

Ahead For Road Test Evaluations

Following successful tests on rigs, BMW and DeepDrive are now planning field tests to evaluate different drive system variants in BMW EV models on the road. As of now, specific details about the drive variants and test vehicles have not been disclosed. In regards to BMW’s journey to elevating its EVs, the company recently reported its sales for the first half of 2024, delivering 179,557 fully EVs globally, a 34.1% increase compared to the same period last year.

With DeepDrive’s technology achieving awards including the German Innovation Award, its expansive partnerships such as Continental make the partnership more compelling and exemplify the success of BMW’s Startup Garage program. As automakers ramp up innovation in EV technology, the success of this project could potentially lead to more efficient, powerful, and longer-range EVs in BMW’s future lineup.
