
Polestar has given its flagship electric SUV a substantial overhaul for the 2026 model year, with the biggest changes taking place underneath the familiar exterior.
The Polestar 3 Performance now uses an 800-volt electrical architecture, produces up to 680 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. Despite receiving a smaller battery, the SUV also gains range through improved efficiency.
The move from the previous 400-volt system to an 800-volt architecture is one of the most significant changes for the 2026 Polestar 3. The new setup is intended to improve charging speeds and efficiency while supporting higher power output.
The Performance version now produces 680 horsepower through its all-wheel-drive powertrain, compared with 517 hp for the 2024 model. That allows it to reach 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, shaving 0.9 second from the previous model’s time, according to Forbes.
Polestar has also reduced battery capacity. The Performance and Dual Motor versions now use a 106-kWh battery, with 102 kWh usable, compared with 111 kWh previously. The rear-wheel-drive Single Motor version gets a 92-kWh battery.
Despite the smaller pack, the Performance model’s WLTP range has increased from 348 miles to 373 miles. The smaller battery also cuts weight, with the Performance dropping from 2,584 kilograms to 2,525 kg.
The Polestar 3 remains a large SUV, measuring about 4.9 meters long. Its relatively low roofline gives it a sleeker appearance while leaving substantial room for passengers. The cabin offers generous rear legroom and headroom, while the panoramic sunroof adds to the sense of space.
Cargo capacity stands at 484 liters with the rear seats upright and 1,411 liters with them folded. The SUV also has a 32-liter frunk, while 90 liters of the rear cargo area sit beneath the floor. Towing capacity reaches 2,200 kg with a braked trailer.
The Performance model also benefits from active air suspension combining dual-chamber air springs with ZF active dampers. The system can adjust as often as 500 times per second and can lower the vehicle at speed to reduce aerodynamic drag.

The 2026 Polestar 3 also receives a major computing upgrade.
The previous model used NVIDIA’s DRIVE Xavier computer, which delivered 30 TOPS. The new model uses NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin with 254 TOPS — more than eight times the previous system’s computing performance. Polestar says the additional capability could enable more sophisticated advanced driver-assistance functions.
The SUV continues to rely heavily on its central infotainment display for vehicle functions, although conventional controls remain for the wipers, lights and drive functions.
The Polestar 3 Performance is rated for 373 miles of WLTP range, although real-world efficiency is lower.
During testing, the vehicle averaged 2.7 miles per kWh, which would translate to roughly 275 miles of real-world range.
Charging performance is where the new 800-volt system makes an especially noticeable difference. Maximum charging power has increased from 250 kW to 350 kW.
Testing on a 400-kW IONITY charger produced 319 kW at a 37% state of charge, while the vehicle was still accepting 168 kW at 60%. Polestar says the battery can go from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes.
That combination of range and charging speed makes the Performance model particularly suited to long-distance driving.
The Polestar 3 Performance remains an expensive proposition. At the time of the review, a £10,000 discount was available through the end of September, but the SUV still started at £82,040, or about $112,000.
That puts it well above the Tesla Model Y, while the BMW iX3 and Volvo EX60 offer more range for less money, albeit with less performance.
There is also a major limitation for American buyers: Polestar is no longer selling new vehicles in the United States because of legislation targeting cars manufactured in China.
The result is a Polestar 3 that has become substantially more capable without dramatically changing its appearance. The 800-volt architecture, higher output, improved range, faster charging and significantly more powerful computing platform make the 2026 Performance version a major technical upgrade over the original SUV.
