Audi unveiled the Q6 e-tron offroad concept during the Kitzbühel world cup weekend, showcasing how electric vehicles (EVs) can conquer challenging terrain while maintaining luxury standards. This innovative prototype displays the versatility of Audi’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture while paying homage to the brand’s legendary quattro heritage.

Portal Axles Boost Off-Road Ability

The most striking feature of this conceptual evolution is its custom-developed portal axle system, which fundamentally transforms the vehicle’s capabilities. These specially engineered axles elevate the vehicle by 6.3 inches (160 millimeters) above its standard height and, more importantly, amplify torque delivery to the wheels by 50%. This engineering achievement enables the vehicle to tackle gradients of up to 100 percent—equivalent to a 45-degree slope—showcasing remarkable off-road prowess.

The technical specifications underscore the concept’s serious off-road intentions. Two electric motors work in concert to generate 509 horsepower (380 kW), matching the output of the standard SQ6 e-tron. However, the portal axle configuration dramatically increases wheel torque to 13,400 Newton meters (9,883 pound-feet) for ten-second bursts, representing a substantial 4,400 Nm increase over the production model. While this modification reduces the top speed to 108 mph (175 km/h), Audi engineers consider this “adequate for an off-roader.”

Bespoke Engineering for Tough Terrain

Rather than simply adopting off-the-shelf components, Audi developed the portal axles from scratch, integrating them directly into the hub assemblies on both axles. This bespoke approach required comprehensive modifications to the suspension links to ensure proper road behavior. The vehicle’s commanding presence is further enhanced by a 9.8-inch wider track stance, accommodating specialized off-road tires with spikes for extreme terrain navigation.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner emphasized the concept’s significance stating, “The Q6 e-tron offroad concept is a reinterpretation of quattro. The model shows the potential that our platform for all-electric vehicles already has today. This vehicle can claim new ground.”

Visual Upgrades for Off-Road Performance

Moreover, visual modifications complement the technical upgrades, including additional X-shaped headlights and a prominent LED strip mounted on the roof rack. These features not only enhance the vehicle’s capability but also contribute to its distinctive aesthetic presence.

While currently designated as a one-off concept, the Q6 e-tron offroad concept joins a growing trend of manufacturers exploring electric off-road capabilities. It follows in the tracks of Mercedes-Benz’s EQC 4×4² study from 2020 and Volkswagen’s ID. XTREME concept from 2022, though Audi’s implementation of portal axles sets it apart in the segment.

Audi’s Vision for Electric Off-Roading

Enthusiasts eager to see the concept in action can catch its public debut at the F.A.T. Ice Race in Zell Am See, Austria, on February 1, 2025, where it will share the spotlight with legendary motorsport vehicles like the Porsche 911 GT1. For those unable to attend, Audi Sport’s social media channels will provide coverage of the vehicle’s performance.

This innovative concept designates more than just an exercise in engineering—it signals Audi’s vision for the future of electric mobility, where high-performance capabilities extend beyond traditional road use. While it remains uncertain whether this specific configuration will reach production, it reveals the tremendous flexibility of Audi’s PPE platform and suggests exciting possibilities for future EV development.
