Over 17,000 EV Chargers Are Installed Across 120 Amazon Warehouses With 13,500 Rivian EDVs Being In Use

Amazon has silently but surely cemented its place as the largest private electric vehicle (EV) charging operator in the United States (U.S.) with the completion and installation of a massive 17,000 EV chargers over the 2 years in 120 at its warehouses as reported by Bloomberg.
According to Bloomberg, these actions taken by Amazon entail 309 units of Siemens EV chargers with the delivery vans produced by Rivian. The use of a Rivian electric delivery van (EDV) is an adequate choice by Amazon as the EV model contains a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 9,350 lbs. Although with that much-carrying capacity, the range of these Rivian EDVs will drain quickly. In response to Amazon’s installation of EV chargers in a substantial amount, this solution certainly answers the range problem, especially with the company’s one-day deliveries.
As a result of Amazon’s EV-based approach, the efforts to reduce carbon emissions and take on sustainable practices is what the company’s appearance seems to be from the eyes of the general public considering that it had a history of contributing the production of carbon emissions by 71 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2021 and 2022 due to its operations. However, Amazon’s approach of adopting EVs and adding EV chargers are sure signals to the company’s dedication to sustainable practices, spearheading in reducing carbon emissions, and promoting electric mobility.

Interestingly, the collaboration of utilizing Rivian EDVs prove to be useful compared to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. According to Amazon, the Rivian EDVs have delivered over 580 million packages in over 1,800 cities in the U.S. These areas include big urban cities like New York, Boston, Austin, Philadelphia, and Seattle. Moreover, these Rivian EDVs total a number of 13,500 units. With all this in mind, the delivery workflow using Rivian EDVs have made Amazon’s operations smoother as well as making the environment cleaner.
Despite the great results in terms of operations by Amazon by electric mobility, the cost has not been cheap as the Bloomberg estimates the cost to be $50 million to $90 million. Nevertheless, the construction of EV charging infrastructure may be expensive but still delivers a cheaper and sustainable strategy compared to ICE vehicles by 60% according to a 2020 Consumer Reports study.

As Amazon continues to expand and refine its EV charging network, their aim for net zero by 2040 seems to be within its reach with this much progress being done. This sets a great example for other companies from big to small to adopt EVs, especially with the results that Amazon has done in electric mobility and sustainable transportation.
Even though the path to carbon neutrality is still far ahead, EV adoption and increasing EV charging infrastructure will be the deciding factor to put the environment ahead in the priorities of the economy as well as in the corporate world.
