French automaker Alpine has officially entered the electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of its first EV model, the A290 hot hatch. This particular model was inspired by Alpine’s heritage in motorsports as it delivers a performance punch and advanced technological features aimed at improving the driving experience.

The A290 carries several of its design cues from its concept vehicle first shown in 2023, which includes muscular proportions, a squat stance, and rally-inspired lighting elements. Measured at 157 inches long, it strikes an athletic road presence hunkered down on 19-inch wheels.

Despite its compact size, the A290 can hit an acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds due to its front-mounted 215-horsepower electric motor. As the A290 sports the Renault Group’s new EV platform with a 52 kWh battery, it enables an estimated range of up to 236 miles. It also supports DC fast charging up to 100 kW from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes while adding a DCFC and 150 km (92 miles) in about fifteen minutes. In addition, the platform also allows for bidirectional charging for vehicle-to-load applications.

While relatively modest compared to some high-performance EVs, the A290 comes with several innovative features including a special “Overtake” mode activated by a red steering wheel button that delivers a brief power boost for passing maneuvers. There is also a “Recharge” knob to dial in regenerative braking levels on the fly.

Nonetheless, the standout feature of the A290 is its “Alpine Telemetrics” system, providing an almost gamified experience behind the wheel. Three core features provide data tracking, virtual coaching, and point-scoring challenges. In terms of Live Data, it streams real-time information on acceleration, braking, g-forces, and even battery levels across multiple vibrant displays, keeping drivers informed and engaged with every maneuver.

As for Coaching, it offers invaluable insights from Alpine’s engineers, tailored to enhance driving techniques and performance on the track. Meanwhile, Challenges introduce video game-style missions that push drivers to test their agility, power, and endurance, unlocking new levels of excitement and achievement behind the wheel.

As for production, the Alpine A290 will assembled at the Manufacture in Douai in Franc’es ElectriCity. Notably, its electric motor and battery will also be assembled in France starting in the summer of 2025. Furthermore, the A290 will be followed by a new electric version of the A110 as well.

With the Alpine A290 set for only the European market for now, buyers from the United States (U.S.) will see the Alpine brand on its shores by 2027. As the Alpine A290 is aimed to make a statement in the EV industry for its innovative features, this places the company at new heights in the automotive landscape.
