2025 Volvo EX40 Unveiled: New Name, Improved Performance, And Lower Pricing
The XC40 Recharge Is Rebranded To EX40 With Upgraded Battery And Charging, While Volvo Introduces A Streamlined EV Naming Strategy
In a significant action to streamline its electric vehicle (EV) nomenclature, Volvo is renaming its first mass-produced electric car, the XC40 Recharge, to the EX40 for the 2025 model year in the United States (U.S.) market.
Upgraded Battery and Charging for 2025 EX40
The rebranding comes with notable technical improvements. The dual-motor variant of the 2025 EX40 receives an upgraded 82-kilowatt-hour battery pack, increased from the previous 78 kWh capacity. Both single-motor and dual-motor configurations benefit from enhanced charging capabilities, with maximum DC fast-charging speeds increasing from 200 to 205 kilowatts.
These improvements translate to better range performance. The single-motor EX40, which maintains its 248 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque output, achieves an EPA-rated range of 296 miles, designating a modest increase from its predecessor’s 293-mile range. The more powerful dual-motor version, producing 402 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque, can now travel up to 260 miles on a single charge, six miles further than the 2024 model.
Lower Pricing for the EX40
The 2025 EX40’s pricing structure has been adjusted downward, making the electric SUV more accessible. The base single-motor Core grade starts at $53,795 (including a $1,295 destination charge), while Plus and Ultra grades are priced at $56,595 and $60,295, respectively. All-wheel drive remains available across all trim levels for an additional $1,750.
C40 Recharge Pauses, Returns as EC40 in 2026
Moreover, the C40 Recharge, the coupe-styled variant of the XC40 Recharge, will take a brief hiatus from the U.S. market. When it returns as a 2026 model, it will be renamed the EC40, following Volvo’s new naming convention where “EC” designates electric coupes. This temporary absence coincides with Volvo’s broader strategy to clarify its vehicle nomenclature, with conventional mild-hybrid models retaining the XC designation and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) carrying the T8 badge.
Volvo’s New Global Naming Convention
These changes reflect Volvo’s comprehensive approach to electrification, positioning the EX40 between the newly introduced entry-level EX30 and the flagship three-row EX90 in size and price. The naming standardization, which was implemented in Europe last year, aims to eliminate consumer confusion and strengthen Volvo’s EV brand identity globally.
The 2025 EX40 presents a mature offering in the luxury electric SUV segment, combining improved technical specifications with more attractive pricing.
