BMW has announced a strategic partnership with Rimac, signaling the company’s commitment to strengthen its electric vehicles (EVs). This partnership also signals BMW’s aim of advancing its next-generation EV models through improved battery technology.

Rimac will supply high-voltage EV batteries for BMW’s future EV lineup. This partnership marks a milestone for Rimac Tech, the company’s technology division, representing “the largest and most ambitious project the company has undertaken to date.”

Founder and CEO of Rimac Group Matt Rimac expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating his journey into electric mobility began with a BMW 3 Series conversion, “My business journey began with a 1984 BMW 3 Series that I converted into an electric car in my garage at the age of 20, so it’s a perfect piece of symmetry to partner with the BMW Group today.”

The partnership will see Rimac establishing battery production lines at its campus near Zagreb, Croatia, with a big portion dedicated to BMW’s requirements. This move aligns with BMW’s vision to enhance its EV offerings, as presented by the unveiling of the Vision Neue Klasse earlier this year.

In addition, BMW explained that its upcoming Neue Klasse models will feature sixth-generation eDrive motors and round battery cells. These features will be developed independently of Rimac’s involvement. Nevertheless, the possibility of incorporating enhanced batteries co-engineered with Rimac post-launch remains open.

While financial details remain undisclosed, both BMW and Rimac have hinted at further announcements to come. Moreover, BMW’s commitment to electrification extends beyond this partnership as the company has plans to deploy next-gen EV batteries across multiple global sites, including South Carolina, Mexico, Hungary, and China.

The partnership between BMW and Rimac illustrates a convergence between the two companies striving for innovation in the electric mobility landscape. As we wait for more reveals of BMW’s next-generation EVs, this partnership will deliver EV battery advancements that could change the EV industry’s standards.
