BMW has bumped its projected EPA driving range for the upcoming 2027 iX5 60 xDrive—the first battery-electric X5—to as much as 450 miles on a charge, a 15-mile gain over the preliminary figure shared at its June reveal.

The updated number remains an internal BMW projection rather than a certified federal rating, with official EPA figures expected in the next few weeks.

Gen6 cylindrical cells and 800-volt hardware underpin the 15-mile bump

BMW luxury-vehicle product manager John Kelly disclosed the 450-mile projection during the U.S. media launch for the new X5 family, up from the 435-mile internal estimate BMW USA published when the SUV debuted on June 30.

Even so, BMW’s U.S. consumer site still displayed the 435-mile estimate over the weekend, and the 2027 iX5 has not yet been posted to the federal fueleconomy.gov registry, according to Eletric Vehicles.

Under the skin, the electric SUV rides on BMW’s sixth-generation (Gen6) 800-volt powertrain using 120-millimeter cylindrical cells that boost cell-level energy by nearly 30% over the shorter 95-millimeter cells in the iX3. BMW’s American specifications list a 144 kWh net usable battery pack, whereas its British press materials cite 141 kWh net without explaining the gap.

Dual motors—an induction unit up front that decouples under light loads and an electrically excited synchronous motor at the rear—deliver 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque for a 4.4-second 0-to-60 mph sprint. Through its native NACS port, the SUV supports peak DC fast charging of 460 kW, taking the pack from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes or adding roughly 170 miles in 10 minutes.

Wheel choices and rivals as Spartanburg prepares for Q1 2027 rollout

The automaker has not clarified which wheel size achieves the 450-mile mark, an important caveat given that the smaller Gen6 iX3 50 xDrive scores 434 miles on 20-inch summer tires but drops to between 383 and 399 miles across its four other wheel setups.

Should the EPA sign off on 450 miles, the iX5 60 xDrive would tie the two-row 2027 Lucid Gravity GT on base wheels while topping the 410-mile 2026 Rivian R1S Dual Max, the 364-mile 2026 BMW iX xDrive60 and the 352-mile 2026 Tesla Model X.

Priced from $79,800 plus a $1,450 destination fee, the 2027 iX5 60 xDrive will be the first pure EV assembled at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina complex—using battery packs from nearby Woodruff—when U.S. showroom deliveries begin in the first quarter of 2027.
