Slated to enter production in Munich in 2027 on the Neue Klasse architecture, the quad-motor sports sedan is being engineered to give track drivers audible and tactile feedback.

BMW M Chief Executive Officer Frank van Meel confirmed in a video interview published Monday, October 26, that the division’s upcoming battery-electric M3 sedan will pair synthesized soundtrack cues with virtual gearshifts.
Slated to enter production in Munich in 2027 on the Neue Klasse architecture, the quad-motor sports sedan is being engineered to give track drivers audible and tactile feedback.
Speaking with IMSA President John Doonan at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in a video posted to IMSA’s YouTube channel, van Meel explained that simulated downshifts and rev cues let circuit drivers judge braking zones and throttle load by ear without taking their eyes off the track.
Standing beside the BMW M Concept Neue Klasse—which previews the production car with an M4 GT3-style motor-cooling hood vent and lightweight natural-fiber composite panels that cut manufacturing CO2 emissions by 40% compared with carbon fiber—van Meel added that combustion M models will remain on sale alongside electric versions, according to Eletric Vehicles.
Van Meel likened the shift to battery power to earlier generational transitions across the M3’s history—from four-cylinder to six-cylinder, V8 and turbocharged inline-six engines—insisting the electric sedan will hold up to full track use without breaking down.

On October 2, as its flagship Munich plant completed BMW M’s one-millionth vehicle, the automaker confirmed a 650-million-euro ($725 million) conversion that will turn Munich into an all-electric factory starting in 2027, where the four-motor electric M3 will be built.
While BMW has not yet disclosed power, weight, range or pricing for the electric M3, its rollout follows the late-September U.S. showroom arrival of the Hungary-built Neue Klasse iX3 50 xDrive ($61,500 before $1,350 destination, rated up to 434 miles EPA) and precedes early-2027 U.S. deliveries of the eighth-generation 3 Series and electric i3 sedan.
Across BMW Group globally, third-quarter battery-electric deliveries climbed 7.2% year over year to 110,257 vehicles on strong European demand, even as U.S. electrified volume dipped 24.9% in the third quarter following the September 2025 expiration of federal EV tax credits.
