Volvo Unveils AI-Powered Multi-Adaptive Seatbelts for Enhanced Safety

Volvo, a brand synonymous with automotive safety, has revealed its latest innovation: a “multi-adaptive safety belt” design that leverages artificial intelligence and advanced sensor technology to significantly enhance occupant protection. This new seatbelt system, set to debut in the 2026 EX60 electric crossover, marks a significant evolution from traditional seatbelt designs.

Intelligent Adaptation for Personalized Protection

Building on its legacy of safety breakthroughs, including the pioneering three-point seatbelt, Volvo’s new design goes beyond conventional pretensioners found in modern cars. While current seatbelts tighten upon impact, Volvo’s multi-adaptive system actively adjusts its load settings based on real-time data.

The system utilizes an array of cabin sensors to gather detailed information about each occupant, including their size, weight, body shape, and seating position. This data, combined with crash specifics such as direction and speed, allows the seatbelt to vary the force it applies during an impact. For instance, a larger occupant in a severe crash would receive a higher belt load setting to mitigate head injury risk, while a smaller occupant in a milder collision would experience a lower belt load to reduce the risk of rib fractures. Volvo states this expands load-limiting profiles from three to eleven, allowing for a much more tailored response.

AI Integration and Over-the-Air Updates

The multi-adaptive seatbelt system is deeply integrated with the vehicle’s other safety systems, including airbags and cameras, all managed by artificial intelligence. This AI aims to optimize the combined performance of these systems to maximize occupant protection. Volvo also plans to improve the system’s effectiveness over time through over-the-air (OTA) updates, which will incorporate insights gained from real-world accident data. The AI’s ability to analyze variables and even potentially predict accidents allows the car to prepare and fine-tune its safety response proactively.

Debut in the 2026 EX60

The 2026 EX60 electric crossover will be the first Volvo model to feature this groundbreaking seatbelt technology, with all subsequent new Volvo models expected to follow suit.
