Volvo is significantly increasing the electric-driving capability of its plug-in hybrid SUVs for the 2028 model year. The XC60 T8 AWD Long range will offer up to 78 miles of electric range, while the larger XC90 T8 AWD Long range will reach up to 73 miles when the updated SUVs arrive with U.S. customers in early 2027.
Volvo says the XC60’s range more than doubles that of the current model.
The XC60 receives a design refresh alongside a larger floor-integrated battery and a more powerful electric motor. Exterior changes include revisions to the grille, front bumper, hood, front fenders, wheels, tailgate and rear lighting, while the Thor’s Hammer LED headlights receive an updated design.
Inside, Volvo has redesigned the dashboard and added wood trim, ventilated Nappa leather and upgraded lighting. The SUV also gains an 11.2-inch display running Volvo Car UX, with Google Gemini providing natural-language assistance for navigation, messages and trip planning, according to GM Authority.
The XC60 also receives additional safety and convenience technology, including automatic emergency braking, automatic emergency steering, cyclist alerts, lane-change assist and a 360-degree camera with a 3D view.
Volvo Cars President and CEO Håkan Samuelsson said the updated plug-in hybrids build on the company’s established SUV lineup.
“Now, as long-range plug-in hybrids, they build on those legacies and, together with the all-electric EX60, give us our strongest-ever electrified offering in the mid-size SUV segment.”

The XC90 receives fewer exterior changes but retains its seven-seat configuration and upscale interior. Like the XC60, it gains the long-range plug-in hybrid powertrain and Google Gemini, while an available Bowers & Wilkins audio system adds to its premium equipment.
The two SUVs also give Volvo a notable position in the U.S. PHEV market. Cadillac sells an XT5 plug-in hybrid in China, but the source notes that it does not provide a direct American-market rival to the XC60. The larger XC90 also currently lacks a direct three-row Cadillac counterpart with a gas engine, with the next-generation XT6 still to arrive.
Volvo plans to begin production of the updated XC60 and XC90 later this fall. Pricing and final EPA range figures are expected closer to the start of customer deliveries.
