Volvo Cars have announced a new advancement in electric vehicle (EV) charging convenience through a new partnership with Hubject, aiming to bring Plug&Charge technology to Volvo’s EVs starting with the EX90 model.

In terms of Plug&Charge, the feature allows EV owners to start charging their EVs simply by plugging in without the need for cards or mobile apps. The charging system automatically handles authentication and payment, streamlining the entire process. This EV technology also adheres to the ISO15118-2 standard.

Christian Hahn, CEO of Hubject, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership stating, “We are really pleased to welcome Volvo Cars into the Plug&Charge ecosystem. It is a clear commitment by Volvo Cars to make the EV charging experience convenient, easy and secure and to encourage more people to make the switch to electric.”

Moreover, the implementation of Plug&Charge is part of Volvo’s broader Public Charging Service, which aims to simplify the process of locating and using public chargers for Volvo EV owners. Interestingly, this service will grant access to the Plug&Charge feature through any compatible charge point operator (CPO).

Alexander Petrofski, Head of Volvo Cars Energy Solutions, expressed the alignment of this initiative with Volvo’s ambitious electrification goals stating, “By next year already, we want 50% of our sales to be pure electric and 100% by 2030. Delivering a hassle-free premium experience by removing perceived obstacles to EV ownership is central to our strategy.”

In Volvo’s EV lineup, the EX90 model will be the first to incorporate the Hubject V2G Root Certificate, enabling the Plug&Charge functionality. The company plans to extend this EV technology to additional fully electric models in its lineup, ensuring a consistent charging experience across various networks.

With the addition of the Hubject V2G Root Certificate, the EV model will be further enhanced in its capabilities making it stand out in the EV market.

With this partnership representing a major step in Volvo’s journey towards becoming fully electric by 2030, innovations like Plug&Charge are expected to play a crucial role in accelerating EV adoption by making the transition to EVs more appealing.
