Between Volvo and CATL, both companies have signed a memorandum of strategic cooperation, and hopes of achieving innovation of recycling old EV batteries into new ones are planted in their goals. To elaborate, this partnership will consist of Volvo-certified suppliers recycling old and used EV batteries. These recycled materials will include nickel, cobalt, and lithium. After, CATL will use those recycled materials to produce new EV batteries to be implanted in Volvo EVs.

Tan Libin, Co-President of the Market System at CATL, discussed the potential outcomes with Volvo stating, “Our agreement with Volvo Cars represents a critical milestone in establishing a domestic battery recycling and closed-loop business model, marking the beginning of a new era in battery recycling management.”

Furthermore, Volvo has made great progress in addressing environmental challenges by pledging to be fully electric by 2030. In addition, Volvo’s recent success of record-breaking global sales in March of a 25% year-over-year increase places the company as a frontrunner in making EVs more accessible for the EV market. This partnership also comes after the Hyundai and Toray Industries partnership that plans to develop materials technology in Hyundai’s EVs.

This innovative recycling initiative from this partnership will signal a new benchmark for sustainable practices that can also elevate future EV models and their batteries. As a result, the future of electric mobility will be founded partly by recycling initiatives regarding EV batteries that will make EV technology better and more sustainable.
