Volkswagen has revealed the first design sketches of its upcoming entry-level electric vehicle (EV), tentatively known as the ID.1 or “IDEvery1.” The company plans to unveil the concept version on March 5, marking a crucial step in its strategy to make EVs accessible to a wider market segment.

The newly released sketches, shared on LinkedIn by Volkswagen, showcase a compact yet spacious design that combines functionality with contemporary styling. The vehicle features a distinctive front end with rounded headlights, drawing some inspiration from the ID.Life concept car presented in 2021. Volkswagen’s design approach appears to embrace what industry observers call “humanization” of vehicle design – a trend also seen in competitors like the electric Renault 5 – where cars are given friendly, approachable visual characteristics.

Thomas Schäfer, Volkswagen Passenger Cars CEO, describes the upcoming vehicle as “an affordable, high-quality, and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe.” The production version, scheduled for launch in 2027, aims to achieve a breakthrough price point of around €20,000 (around $21,000), making it one of the most affordable EVs in the market.

Part of Volkswagen’s EV Transformation

This entry-level EV is part of Volkswagen’s broader transformation strategy, known as ‘Zukunft Volkswagen.’ The plan, which includes significant organizational changes such as relocating Golf production to Mexico and closing the Dresden plant by late 2025, demonstrates the company’s commitment to reshaping its business model for the electric era.

Moreover, the ID.1/IDEvery1 will complement the slightly larger ID.2, which is based on the ID.2all concept and scheduled for production in late 2025 or early 2026. Together, these models form part of an ambitious plan to launch nine new vehicles by 2027, including electric versions of the popular Golf and T-Roc crossover.

Challenges and Market Strategy

Despite selling more than 1.35 million ID vehicles globally since 2019, with 383,100 units sold last year alone, the automaker has faced challenges ranging from supply chain disruptions to increased competition, particularly in the Chinese market. To address these challenges, Volkswagen has recently entered into a $5.8 billion joint venture with Rivian, focusing on electrical architecture and software development for future mass-market EVs.

While the initial focus appears to be on the European market, questions remain about the potential availability of these affordable EVs in other regions, including North America. The recent cancellation of the ID.7 for the United States (U.S.) market has raised questions about Volkswagen’s EV strategy for different global markets.

As Volkswagen prepares for the concept’s full reveal in March, the automotive industry will be watching closely to see how the company plans to achieve its ambitious price target while delivering the quality and features that modern consumers expect.
