The standard production model, tested at the Nardò Technical Center in southern Italy this December, surpassed its World Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) rated range of 709 km (440 miles) by an impressive 32.7 percent. To put this achievement in perspective, the vehicle’s energy consumption of just 9.2 kWh per 100 km is equivalent to approximately one liter of diesel fuel per 100 km – a level of efficiency that was once thought impossible for a large electric sedan.

Notably, this accomplishment is particularly noteworthy since the test vehicle was a completely unmodified production model from Volkswagen’s Emden electromobility plant. The ID.7 Pro S achieves exceptional efficiency through a combination of advanced engineering features, including a highly aerodynamic design with a drag coefficient of 0.23 and the innovative APP550 drive system.

The test conditions reflected real-world urban driving scenarios, with professional drivers from Volkswagen’s Driving Experience team maintaining an average speed of 29 km per hour – a velocity that closely mirrors typical rush hour speeds in major European cities, which range from 22 km/h in Hamburg to 31 km/h in Amsterdam. The ambient temperatures during testing ranged from 5 to 15 degrees Celsius, conditions that can often challenge EV performance.

Despite its focus on efficiency, the ID.7 Pro S did not compromise on performance. The rear-axle electric motor generates an exceptional 545 Newton meters of torque, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km per hour in just 6.6 seconds. For long-distance travel, the vehicle’s 200 kW DC fast-charging capability allows it to add 244 km (151 miles) of range in merely 10 minutes, with a 10% to 80% charge taking around 26 minutes.

Market Success in Europe

The market response to the ID.7 has been notably positive, particularly in Europe. Martin Sander, Volkswagen’s Board Member for Sales, Marketing, and After Sales, revealed an interesting shift in consumer preferences stating, “We are currently selling more ID.7 models than Passat. This shows that the ID.7 is a meaningful all-electric addition to the brand’s product portfolio and, in addition to our successful Passat, is also suitable for long-distance drivers and as a company car.”

ID.7 Represents EV Future

Furthermore, this efficiency milestone comes at a crucial time for EV adoption, showing that modern EVs can not only match but potentially exceed the range of capabilities of conventional vehicles while offering superior performance and environmental benefits.

Moreover, the ID.7’s achievement helps address one of the primary concerns about EVs – range anxiety – and suggests that the technology has matured to a point where EVs can confidently serve as primary vehicles for both daily commuting and long-distance travel.

Available in both sedan and Tourer variants, the ID.7 combines this outstanding efficiency with practical features that appeal to families and business users alike, including generous interior space and advanced comfort features.

With the ID.7’s combination of range, performance, and practicality, the EV model symbolizes a substantial step forward in the evolution of EVs and their increasing viability as replacements for traditional gas vehicles.
