Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz Will Have New Entry-Level Trim That Features Smaller 62 kWh Battery

Volkswagen is gearing up for an expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) lineup with the impending launch in the United States (U.S.) of its ID. Buzz model, a modern reinterpretation of the iconic Microbus.
Lars Krause, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, recently announced plans to introduce a new entry-level variant of the ID. Buzz in an interview with German publication Automobilwoche. This more affordable ID. Buzz will feature a smaller 62 kWh battery pack, positioning it below the current offerings in terms of price. While specific details about the launch date and pricing for this new version remain undisclosed, it is clear that Volkswagen is aiming to make its electric van more accessible.

For the U.S. market, it will receive a specially designed version of the ID. Buzz that features a longer wheelbase and a three-row configuration. It will also be equipped with a larger 91 kWh battery, delivering improved range to complement its spacious interior. Volkswagen also plans to offer the ID. Buzz in three trims: Pro S, Pro S Plus, and a limited launch-only First Edition.
Furthermore, Volkswagen is ramping up production of the ID. Buzz with Krause revealed plans to double production in the second half of the year compared to the same period last year. The company is aiming to reach an annual production of over 100,000 units in the medium term, a substantial increase from the 35,000 units produced in 2023.
This production boost will be facilitated by the phase-out of the T6.1 model, allowing more capacity space at Volkswagen’s Hanover plant where the ID. Buzz is produced alongside the Multivan. Krause also emphasized that the ID. Buzz will play a crucial role in the plant’s capacity utilization going forward.

Notably, the expansion its not limited to the entry-level model and the U.S.-specific long-wheelbase version. Volkswagen is also introducing a high-performance GTX trim, further heightening the ID. Buzz’s appeal.

As Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz prepares to make its US. debut in the coming months, it carries not only the legacy of its beloved predecessor but also the company’s plans in the EV market. With its expanded lineup and increased production capacity, the ID. Buzz model will lead the charge in Volkswagen’s EV lineup.
