Volkswagen has officially confirmed its newest addition to its electric vehicle lineup, the ID.2X, a compact electric SUV scheduled to make its global debut at IAA Mobility in Munich this September 2025. The announcement came from CEO Thomas Schäfer, who confirmed the vehicle will serve as the electric successor to the popular T-Cross model.

As the slightly larger sibling to the upcoming ID.2 supermini, the ID.2X will be built on the company’s entry-level MEB platform. The electric SUV will feature a single front-motor configuration with front-wheel drive, delivering 223 horsepower. Buyers will have a choice between two battery options: a 38 kWh or a larger 58 kWh pack, with the latter capable of achieving around 280 miles of range under WLTP testing conditions. The vehicle’s charging capabilities are equally noteworthy, with 125kW DC rapid charging enabling a 10-80% charge in just 20 minutes.

Expected Bold Design and Tech-Packed Interior

In terms of design, Volkswagen’s head designer Andreas Mindt describes the ID.2X as embracing a “safe, confident, bold” aesthetic while maintaining simplicity. The vehicle is expected to feature distinctive elements such as short overhangs, pronounced wheel arches, and a unique three-slat design on the C-pillar reminiscent of the ID. Buzz.

As for the interior, it is anticipated to feature a 12.9-inch infotainment screen alongside a 10.9-inch driver display. The manufacturer has also prioritized practicality, with the ID.2X expected to offer more cargo space than the ID.2’s already generous 490-liter capacity, including a 50-liter lockable compartment under the boot floor.

Positioned Pricing and Production

The ID.2X is part of Volkswagen’s aim to introduce affordable EVs, positioned with a starting price of around £25,000 ($31,000). This pricing strategy places it in direct competition with upcoming models like the Renault 4 E-Tech. The vehicle will be manufactured in Spain alongside its siblings, including the ID.2, marking a new step in the Volkswagen Group’s Electric Urban Car Family initiative.

Volkswagen is not stopping with the ID.2X. The company has already teased an even more affordable EV, the ID.EVERY1, is set to be unveiled on March 5. This upcoming model, expected to launch in 2027 as the ID.1, aims to push the boundaries of accessibility further with a target price of around £17,000 (around $21,430).

As the Volkswagen ID.2X’s September’s Munich debut approaches, the automotive industry will be watching closely to see how this new model could reshape the accessible EV market.
