Uber Technologies confirmed that Hertz will support its upcoming robotaxi service through a new subsidiary called Oro Mobility. The unit will handle day-to-day fleet operations including charging, maintenance, cleaning, repairs, and depot staffing, according to TechCrunch.
The service is expected to launch in the San Francisco Bay Area by the end of 2026, using the Lucid Gravity and autonomous driving systems from Nuro.
Hertz’s role reflects a growing need for specialized fleet management in autonomous mobility. Oro Mobility is designed to fill what the company describes as an operational gap as transportation shifts from privately owned vehicles to commercially managed fleets.

Uber’s robotaxi strategy is increasingly built around partnerships. Lucid Motors is supplying the vehicles, Nuro provides self-driving technology, and Hertz now manages fleet logistics.
Uber has already committed to purchasing at least 35,000 vehicles from Lucid, starting with 10,000 Gravity SUVs and expanding to additional models based on Lucid’s upcoming mid-size platform. The company also holds an equity stake of more than 11% in Lucid, reinforcing the long-term partnership.
Hertz’s involvement marks a shift toward its core strength in fleet operations after earlier EV purchasing efforts, including deals with Tesla, General Motors, and Polestar, faced challenges tied to costs and market dynamics.
With expansion opportunities already being explored for 2027, the addition of Hertz underscores how robotaxi deployment is becoming a coordinated effort across automakers, tech firms, and mobility operators.
