The model lineup also includes hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell variants aimed at global markets outside the U.S.

Toyota has officially unveiled the ninth-generation Hilux pickup, marking a major evolution for one of the world’s most enduring nameplates. Debuting in Bangkok, Thailand, the all-new Hilux introduces a battery-electric version for the first time, part of Toyota’s broader multi-pathway strategy toward carbon neutrality. The model lineup also includes hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell variants aimed at global markets outside the U.S.
The new Hilux BEV (battery electric vehicle) is powered by a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery feeding dual eAxles for permanent all-wheel drive. Toyota targets a combined system output of 193 horsepower and a driving range of about 150 miles. Engineers positioned the battery under the floor while maintaining the Hilux’s traditional body-on-frame construction, preserving its rugged off-road capability.
Early data show the electric Hilux can tow up to 3,500 pounds and carry a 1,500-pound payload. Toyota also confirmed the truck will include a Multi-Terrain Select system to optimize traction across varied surfaces. The brand emphasized that the Hilux BEV is designed not only for urban work fleets but also for light off-road use in developing markets where reliability and durability are critical, according to GM Authority.

Beyond the BEV, Toyota announced a new Hilux Hybrid 48V model that combines a 2.8-liter diesel engine with a mild-hybrid 48V motor-generator. This variant is expected to be the volume seller in Western Europe, offering better fuel efficiency without compromising towing power. Looking ahead, Toyota also confirmed a hydrogen fuel cell Hilux slated for 2028 in Europe and Oceania, a move that reinforces its long-term bet on hydrogen as part of a diversified electrification roadmap.
Visually, the ninth-gen Hilux adopts a “Tough and Agile” design theme, featuring a bolder front fascia, slimmer headlights, and an upgraded cabin with available dual 12.3-inch displays. Despite its global focus, Toyota clarified that the electric Hilux will not reach the U.S., where the Tacoma continues to dominate the midsize pickup segment.
