Toyota Gears Up To Launch Advanced Self-Driving EV In China For 2025

Toyota has announced plans to introduce its first electric vehicle (EV) that will come with advanced self-driving capabilities in China next year, challenging rivals including Tesla and domestic Chinese automakers innovating their own self-driving technology.

GAC Toyota’s Self-Driving System

In detail, the joint venture between Toyota Motor and China’s Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) named GAC Toyota revealed that it will launch the Bozhi 3X SUV with a self-driving system in 2025 according to Reuters. The self-driving system is noted to be comparable with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, enabling advanced driver-assist features including navigating roads, avoiding obstacles, and parking autonomously.

Additional Partnerships

Notably, the development of Toyota’s self-driving system stems from the company’s partnership with Momenta, where it was a lead investor in Momenta’s 2021 Series C financing round. In addition to the Momenta collaboration, GAC Toyota is also working with Huawei to integrate its in-vehicle operating software into future models, starting with an EV sedan aimed for release in 2025.

Furthermore, Toyota also announced plans to introduce an iron phosphate lithium battery by 2027, which could potentially reduce production costs of its EVs by 40% compared to the current bZ4X model.

This strategy arrives at a pivotal time for GAC Toyota in the Chinese market as the first four months of 2024 saw the company’s vehicle sales fall by 22% in contrast to the same period in 2023. As a result, the self-driving system in Toyota’s upcoming EVs will position them higher in China’s EV market.

With the introduction of GAC Toyota’s self-driving EVs to challenge rivals in the Chinese automotive industry, the company’s latest move showcases its determination to remain competitive.
