Toyota will debut three fully electric vehicles in South Africa in early 2026.

Toyota will debut three fully electric vehicles in South Africa in early 2026, marking its first move into the country’s limited EV market.
The automaker’s announcement comes as Chinese brands, such as BYD, increase their presence alongside established European competitors. Toyota currently sells only hybrids in South Africa, holding a dominant 67% share of the hybrid and plug-in hybrid segment as of 2024, thanks to models like the Corolla Cross.
Toyota South Africa’s CEO, Andrew Kirby, confirmed the upcoming launch of its battery electric vehicles in the region. However, he also noted that the legacy automaker would continue offering a range of powertrains, including internal combustion, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, fuel cell, and even carbon-neutral combustion engines.
According to Reuters, Toyota’s three BEVs in South Africa will be imported at first, with local production under consideration for the future. The move comes despite challenges in South Africa’s EV market, including high import duties, limited charging infrastructure, and power reliability concerns.

Chinese EV makers are aggressively entering South Africa as they seek markets outside the US and Europe. Rising interest in South Africa has raised strategic concerns for Toyota.
Kirby said the local automotive sector is at an “inflection point,” with flat production volumes and a surge in imported vehicle sales. Toyota and other major automakers have submitted policy recommendations to the trade and industry minister, including changes to tax structures and rebate systems. Short-term policy interventions could be announced within six months.
