China’s Jiangsu Provincial Government Published A List of NEVs Eligible For Government Purchases Included Tesla’s Model Y For The First Time

As Tesla builds its presence in China, the company’s popular Model Y electric vehicle (EV) has been included in a local government vehicle procurement catalog for the first time.
China’s Jiangsu provincial government in eastern China recently published a list of 56 batches of new energy vehicles (NEVs) eligible for purchase as service cars for party, government, and public organizations. Inside the list, the Tesla Model Y Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) trim, produced at the company’s Shanghai Gigafactory made a rare appearance.

In regards to qualifying for the list, vehicles must have a range exceeding 400 km (248 miles) and be priced under RMB 250,000 ($34,382). The Tesla Model Y RWD meets these criteria with its CLTC range of 554 km (344 miles) and a starting price of RMB 249,990 ($34,268) before options.
As a result, this inclusion signals a notable turnaround in Tesla’s relationship with Chinese authorities. Previously, the company encountered restrictions due to data security concerns with Tesla EVs barred from entering certain government and military compounds. However, these concerns appear to have been addressed following Tesla’s establishment of a local data center and guarantees that data from its Chinese fleet would remain within the country according to Reuters.
Notably, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) recently confirmed that Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y, along with models from five other automakers have met China’s compliance requirements for data security.

While the exact number of Model Y EVs that the Jiangsu government may purchase remains unspecified, this development arrives at a critical time for Tesla’s performance in the Chinese market. The company has faced challenges in the market, with deliveries of China-made Tesla EVs falling 9% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

Yet, Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s recent visit to China yielded positive results. A standout result is the Chinese government has increased its support for Tesla by potentially allowing the rollout of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) program in the country.
With this breakthrough in government procurement eligibility could provide a much-needed boost for Tesla in the face of intensifying domestic competition in the Chinese market, the company’s EVs will seek to continue to aim for new heights in its industry for further growth while aiming for the top.
