Tesla Issues Two Recalls For Cybertruck Affecting Over 11,000 Units

As electric vehicles (EVs) have been facing recalls for the past month, Tesla is next in line as it has announced two recalls for its Cybertruck EV model, affecting more than 11,000 units.

Tesla’s first recall addresses a concern with the exterior trim around the truck bed trim according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In detail, the “sail applique,” a cosmetic piece along the bed trim, may not have been installed correctly or with proper adhesion. This defect could cause the trim to become loose or detach completely while driving, potentially creating a road hazard. As a result, the recall affects all 11,383 Cybertrucks produced since May 26, 2024.

Interestingly in a separate but simultaneous recall, Tesla addresses a concern with the Cybertruck’s windshield wiper motor. According to the NHTSA’s report, the motor controller may stop functioning due to electrical overstress, which could lead to non-functional wipers and increase the risk of crashes in wet weather conditions. As for this recall, it affects all Cybertrucks built through June 6, 2024.

Notably, these recalls require physical repairs rather than the over-the-air (OTA) software updates Tesla commonly utilizes to address issues on its EVs. Moreover, Tesla has stated it will replace or rework the affected trim pieces and replace the wiper motors at no cost to customers.

Furthermore, this is not the first time the Cybertruck has faced recalls. The Cybertruck, which started deliveries in November 2023 after delays, has faced several setbacks since its launch. Earlier in the year, Tesla recalled around 4,000 Cybertrucks due to a problem with the accelerator pedal, and the model was also included in a broader recall of 2.2 million Tesla vehicles for warning text issues about braking. 

Despite these challenges, Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently reported progress in Cybertruck production, claiming the company had produced 1,300 units in a week. However, he did not specify when this milestone was achieved or if this production rate would be sustained.

These recalls come at a crucial time for Tesla, as the company aims to ramp up Cybertruck production to meet its targets. Musk has previously stated a goal of producing 200,000 Cybertrucks annually, with the potential to increase to 250,000 by 2025.

As Tesla works to resolve these issues in its Cybertruck, the recalls serve as a reminder of the challenges that may bring innovative EVs to market, particularly ones with the unique design and features of the Cybertruck. Nevertheless, Tesla’s swift response is noted as resolving these issues in its Cybertruck will play a crucial role in maintaining buyer confidence and achieving its production goals for this model.
