Tesla has officially launched its highly anticipated Cybertruck electric vehicle (EV) in Canada, marking another milestone for the company in the North American market. Although the EV model arrives with steep pricing that has turned heads in the EV industry.

Tesla started inviting Canadian reservation holders to configure their orders for the Foundation Series Cybertruck. The company is offering two trims: the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) model starting at CAD 137,990 ($100,500), and the top-tier Cyberbeast priced at CAD 165,990 ($120,890).

These prices have raised eyebrows among Canadian buyers. When factoring in various taxes including the federal luxury tax, the final cost becomes even more staggering. Depending on the province, the AWD Cybertruck could cost between CAD$165,000 to CAD$175,000 after taxes, while the Cyberbeast might reach CAD$200,000 to CAD$220,000.

Despite the high prices, Tesla seems confident in the demand for its futuristic electric pickup. The company has announced that deliveries for both trims are projected to start in October 2024 or November 2024, giving eager buyers a concrete timeline to look forward to.

In conjunction with the launch, Tesla has also rolled out Cybertruck test drives in both the United States (U.S.) and Canada, with no reservations required. This strategic move allows potential buyers to experience the EV firsthand before making such a substantial investment.

The launch in Canada follows the successful introduction of the Cybertruck in the U.S., where Tesla has reportedly delivered between 15,000 to 20,000 Foundation Series units since the start of the year. The expansion into the Canadian market comes after Tesla received a key exemption from Transport Canada, paving the way for the EV’s approval.

Moreover, it is worth noting that the current offerings are limited to the Foundation Series, which bundles all available options for an additional CAD$20,000 over the regular price. Tesla is expected to open orders for the standard versions of the Cybertruck, excluding the RWD model, towards the end of the year.

While the Cybertruck’s unique design and advanced features have generated strong buzz since its unveiling, the high price point in Canada may prove to be a hurdle for many prospective buyers. Nevertheless, the success of Tesla’s Cybertruck in the Canadian market will remain to be seen in how Canadian buyers respond to this premium pricing strategy.
