Carlos Tavares, the CEO of Stellantis, passionately addressed the need to downsize the weight of electric vehicle (EV) batteries during the Freedom of Mobility Forum, an event focused on addressing global transportation challenges.

Tavares said that current EV batteries need a large amount of raw materials, restricting their efficiency and sustainability. He also highlighted the need for a “very significant breakthrough in terms of chemistry” to cut the weight of EV batteries in half over the next decade, noting that this advancement would contribute to addressing the issue of lithium scarcity.

Moreover, Tavares conveyed the need for affordable solutions that can meet the diverse needs of consumers worldwide. He also advocated for a transition towards greener transportation alternatives and acknowledged the matter of public support for such a transformation, where collaborative measures will encourage sustainable mobility and address environmental concerns.

The forum participants discussed various approaches to address global mobility challenges, including car sharing, public transportation, and non-motorized mobility options. Significantly, Tavares highlighted the shortage of charging infrastructure as an importance and that they should be more apparent to EV drivers.

Path To EV Battery Improvements

With these thoughts communicated clearly by Tavares, the path to improving EV batteries is placed in the minds of the general public. As EV batteries continually get enhanced to become better versions every day, the attraction towards EV adoption is inevitable as the technology surrounding the EV industry evolves.

Despite these challenges, there are predictions of bright futures for EV batteries. Matthias Preindl, leading Columbia University’s Motor Drives and Power Electronics Laboratory, stated that “Batteries will get better, cheaper, and even power your home or the grid.” He continually asserts that the capabilities of EVs and their batteries are advancing past expectations consistently and that the hesitancy to buy an EV should gone.

Overall, the importance of advancing the usage and reducing the weight of EV batteries is high. With these actions in mind, the path to reaching a more sustainable and EV-filled future will be more likely as long as the crucial steps are considered.
