The Charging Stations Are Projected To Open In 2025

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) is charging ahead with plans to bolster electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the state. In a recent landmark decision, the Oklahoma Transportation Commission gave the green light to allocate over $8 million in federal funds to three private partners. This investment seeks to construct 13 strategically located charging stations along Oklahoma interstates, celebrating a major milestone in the state’s commitment to EVs.

These charging stations are strategically placed within 50 miles of existing or planned sites in designated corridors along I-35, I-40, and I-44. They also play a pivotal role in easing “range anxiety” among EV owners. ODOT Multi-Modal Division Engineer Jared Schwennesen underscored the importance of establishing a reliable charging network to address this concern, both in Oklahoma and nationwide.

The selected private partners, Love’s Travel Stops, Francis Energy LLC, and Tesla Inc., will receive a combined $7 million in private funding to complement the federal investment. Through a collaborative public-private partnership, these companies will spearhead the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the charging stations.
Each charging station will meet strict standards, including 24-hour accessibility, broadband or cellular capability, and a minimum of four charging ports capable of simultaneous 150kW or higher charging. Once operational, these stations are ready to complete the EV charging corridors along key interstate routes. Moreover, the charging stations are projected to be operational by 2025.
The essence of this initiative extends beyond Oklahoma’s borders, aligning with the broader goals of the Federal Highway Administration’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program. Enacted as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, this program conveys a tremendous investment in EV charging infrastructure to establish a nationwide network of 500,000 EV chargers by 2030.
As the charging infrastructure landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like the NEVI Formula Program will play a crucial role in accelerating the adoption of EVs and reducing carbon emissions. With the first phase now underway, Oklahoma’s proactive approach highlights its dedication to fostering a convenient and affordable charging experience for all EV users in the state.
