With a noticeable rise of electric vehicles (EVs) being recalled in recent events, Nissan’s 2023 ARIYA model is next in line for its models in the United States (U.S.) but it arrives with an unusual problem due to a rare oil leak problem, which is something that EVs are not normally associated with.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Nissan has initiated a recall of 84 units with each ARIYA unit potentially affected by damaged O-rings within their front electric motor assemblies. As a result, the defective O-rings could lead to internal oil leaks within the motor, resulting in abnormal wear and debris accumulation as well as unexpected power loss and preventing the EV from restarting.

Furthermore, the affected ARIYA models are the ones produced between May 30, 2022, and February 27, 2023, and they will go under a detailed remedy process once recalled. Moreover, Nissan dealers will replace the front traction motor assembly for free. Nevertheless, the replacement process is estimated to take up to 10.5 hours per unit due to the complexity of the repair procedure.

A Surge In EV Recalls

This highlights the latest report of another EV model being recalled with several being reported recently including Mercedes-Benz EVs having a software battery issue, Volvo’s EX30 receiving software glitches, and Kia’s EV9 having safety concerns over headliner protection. Nonetheless, these recalls do spotlight the meticulous safety protocols in place to ensure prioritized safety for EV owners. Although Nissan’s ARIYA model is the newest to join this group, the EV industry is certain to closely observe and examine its own lineup to avoid any potential similar occurrences.

As Nissan is aiming to rectify this issue, affected owners can schedule a service appointment once receiving the notification letters to ensure the continued safe operation of their EVs. Notification letters will be mailed on July 12, 2024.
