In a compelling demonstration of electric vehicle (EV) capability, Nissan’s Ariya SUV has successfully completed over 30,000 miles of rigorous security patrol duties at the company’s Arizona Testing Center (ATC), challenging traditional perceptions about EV durability in extreme conditions.

The initiative, which started in the Fall of 2023, replaced conventional gas-powered security vehicles with all-electric Ariyas at the 3,000-acre facility south of Phoenix, where temperatures regularly soar above 115 degrees Fahrenheit. The demanding environment has served as an unprecedented real-world test of the vehicle’s resilience and performance.

Owen Thunes, Senior Manager of Test Operations at ATC, explains that security vehicles operate almost continuously, with significant idling time that typically consumes substantial fuel in traditional vehicles. “These vehicles handle virtually everything we throw at them — from rugged terrain to extreme heat — without any issues,” reports Dakota Repass, a member of the ATC security team.

Nissan Ariya’s success in this challenging role can be attributed to its advanced e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive system, which has proven particularly effective in the facility’s varied terrain. Security patrols regularly navigate dirt and gravel paths marked by ruts and washboard surfaces, conditions that become even more challenging during monsoon seasons when access roads transform into muddy obstacles.

One of the test vehicles received minor modifications for its security role, including off-road tires, a roof rack, and auxiliary lighting. Despite these additions and the punishing conditions, the vehicle has maintained reliable performance throughout its service period. The center now operates a fleet of ten Ariyas supporting various operations, including driver training.

Advancing Sustainability at Nissan’s Test Facility

The project extends beyond merely testing vehicle durability. Nissan is using this opportunity to advance its broader sustainability goals at the facility. The company is installing Level-2 charging stations for staff EVs and implementing solar panels over parking areas. These panels serve a dual purpose, both generating clean energy and providing shade to reduce the cooling needs of parked vehicles in the desert heat.

Thunes emphasizes that the Ariya security vehicles make a powerful first impression on visitors to the facility, serving as a tangible demonstration of Nissan’s commitment to zero-emission mobility stating, “It proves that an EV can be used in most applications, and is a great fit here because it has zero tailpipe emissions and requires less maintenance than an ICE vehicle.”
