Chinese electric vehicle maker NIO opened its 60th Power Swap Station in Europe earlier this week. Located in Sankt Augustin, Germany, the new facility highlights NIO’s focus on offering alternatives to traditional EV charging using its battery swapping technology.

Europe’s EV market is growing, with adoption rising 28% in Q1 2025. This makes Europe a huge market for electric vehicle makers such as NIO.

A Milestone in Battery Swap Expansion

The new station in Sankt Augustin aims to enhance user convenience by allowing drivers to swap their cars’ batteries quickly. By offering a rapid way for EV drivers to get back on the road, NIO is hoping that its battery swap technology can fully address range anxiety. Hubert Aiwanger, deputy minister-president of Bavaria, welcomed the new facility. He also praised battery swapping as a meaningful innovation for electric vehicles, as noted in a Xinhua report.

“Many internal combustion engine vehicles are still in use here in Bavaria and across Germany, but more people are choosing electric cars. That makes user-friendliness all the more important, particularly when it comes to range. With this system, users can simply and conveniently swap their battery and continue driving,” Aiwanger said.

Deepening Ties with Germany

NIO’s vice president of Europe, Zhang Hui, emphasized the complementary nature of the Chinese and German automotive industries. Zhang also highlighted that NIO is looking to build a long-term presence in Europe through local partnerships and sustainable mobility initiatives.

“The Chinese and German automotive industries are highly complementary. NIO is committed to deepening cooperation not only in technology, but also in infrastructure and user services… We are not here for short-term gains. We are committed to building a lasting presence in Europe, working with local partners, governments, and communities to bring innovative solutions that make electric mobility more accessible and more sustainable,” Zhang said.

Europe Focus

Europe is fast becoming one of NIO’s key markets. Apart from Germany, the Chinese electric vehicle maker has also launched operations in Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. The company has also stated that it is exploring how its energy services could help enhance the stability of Europe’s electric grid.
