Lucid has announced that its new Gravity electric vehicle (EV) model will be powered by Panasonic Energy’s next-generation lithium-ion battery cells, achieving a remarkable EPA-estimated range of up to 450 miles.

Breakthrough in Battery Design

The technological breakthrough centers on Panasonic’s innovative 2170 cylindrical lithium-ion cells, which achieve an energy density exceeding 800 watt-hours per liter – a notable achievement in the industry. In particular, the battery pack is up to 40% smaller than those of competitors, displaying tremendous efficiency gains in EV battery design.

These advancements have enabled Lucid to create what CEO Peter Rawlinson describes as “a groundbreaking new class of SUV.” The Gravity Grand Touring model, which started production in December 2024, delivers 828 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds. The model’s compact battery design allows for up to 120 cubic feet of cargo space—particularly more than traditional SUVs.

A Trusted Partnership for Innovation

The partnership between Lucid and Panasonic, which began in 2022, builds on Panasonic’s established reputation in the battery industry. By December 2023, Panasonic had supplied around 15 billion lithium-ion batteries globally, powering roughly 3 million EVs without any battery-related recalls. This track record of reliability was likely a key factor in Lucid’s decision to extend the partnership to its new SUV line.

“Lucid Gravity is truly the first SUV that does not force customers to compromise,” explains Rawlinson. “Through our advanced technology and collaboration with Panasonic, we have achieved this with an impressively small battery pack compared to competitors. This is critical to preserving earth’s precious resources.”

Gravity Models and Pricing

The Gravity will be available in two variants. The Grand Touring model, starting at $94,900, is already in production at Lucid’s Arizona plant. A more accessible Touring model, priced at $79,900, is scheduled to begin production in late 2025. Both versions will utilize Panasonic’s advanced battery cells, which are currently produced in Japan but are expected to transition to production at Panasonic’s new Kansas plant.

Kazuo Tadanobu, CEO of Panasonic Energy, emphasized the significance of the collaboration stating, “By combining our high-performance, high-energy density cells with Lucid’s technology, we have been able to utilize the unique characteristics of our cylindrical cells, resulting in an SUV with unparalleled performance and range.”

Lucid’s Momentum in the EV Market

Notably, Lucid has shown strong growth in recent quarters. The company recently reported its fourth consecutive quarter of record deliveries, reaching 10,241 vehicles in 2024 – a 70% increase from the previous year. The success of the Gravity SUV, with its innovative battery technology, could play a crucial role in maintaining this momentum.

The development of more efficient battery technology symbolizes a significant step forward for the entire EV industry. By demonstrating that it’s possible to achieve extended range with smaller battery packs, Lucid and Panasonic are helping to address both the practical and environmental challenges of EV adoption.
