Lucid Faces Backlash Over Customer’s Costly End-Of-Lease Wear And Tear Fees

Lucid Motors is facing growing criticism from lessees who say they’ve been hit with hefty end-of-lease bills for minor wear and tear. One Lucid Air lessee recently revealed being charged nearly $4,000 for scratches, wheel damage, and a missing key fob, costs that effectively raised their lease payment by around $200 per month. The incident adds to a wave of complaints circulating across online owner communities.

Lessee charged thousands for scratches and curb rash

According to a detailed Reddit post, the customer had leased a Lucid Air on an 18-month term before being billed $3,800 at its conclusion for what Lucid described as “Excess Wear.” The charges included $300 for a missing key fob and $2,400 for two front bumper scratches measuring five and six inches. Meanwhile, Lucid noted that the same lower bumper had a pair of longer scratches, 15 inches each, but those were repaired at no cost. The company also charged $200 for curb rash on one wheel and $900 to replace another rather than repair it.

Some observers pointed out the inconsistency in Lucid’s inspection standards, as other minor imperfections like small dents and paint chips were reportedly ignored, according to Carscoops. Still, the total bill left the customer stunned, sparking comparisons to prior cases where Lucid owners faced similar high fees at lease end.

Customers question Lucid and Bank of America’s inspection practices

Lucid’s leasing program, operated in partnership with Bank of America under Lucid Financial Services, relies on independent inspection firms to assess vehicle condition. Many lessees have accused the automaker and its financial partner of overly strict evaluations and inflated costs. One Reddit commenter described the practice as “absolutely crazy,” likening it to “going to a restaurant and charging for every salt grain added to the dish.”

Despite offering competitive lease pricing for the Air, the growing number of complaints has led some potential customers to reconsider future lease deals with the brand.
