LG’s New Software Detects A Wide Range Of Battery Defects And Predicts Future Capacity With Notable Precision

In a major advancement for electric vehicle (EV) safety, LG Energy Solution has announced the development of new battery diagnostics software with an exceptional accuracy rate exceeding 90%.
According to LG Energy Solution, the software, designed to be integrated into EVs’ battery management systems (BMS), can detect a wide range of battery defects including voltage drops during charging, battery tab failures, micro internal short circuits, and abnormal degradation. Notably, the system is compatible with batteries from various manufacturers, not just those produced by LG Energy Solution.
David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution, expressed the company’s goal to provide “irreplaceable and differentiated customer value” in both battery manufacturing and BMS solutions. The software’s development involved analyzing data from over 130,000 battery cells and 1,000 modules, with testing conducted on more than 100,000 EVs.
One of the software’s key features is its ability to predict a battery’s future capacity within a 1% error rate, leveraging AI and cloud technologies. The system continuously upgrades its algorithms through AI computing, improving its diagnostic capabilities over time. LG Energy Solution is also utilizing cloud technology to analyze battery data in real-time, having processed information from over 12,000 EVs to date.
Notably, the company’s venture into the battery safety diagnostics software business is backed by an impressive portfolio of 8,000 BMS-related patents. Nine global automakers are already implementing this software in their vehicles, signaling strong industry interest.
Hyuksung Chung, Vice President of the Business Development Group at LG Energy Solution, highlighted the software’s competitive edge stating, “LG Energy Solution has already developed diagnostics software with capabilities that overwhelm the competition. Backed by various battery patents and vast amounts of empirical data, this leading vehicle software can be applied to an automotive BMS today.”
With LG Energy Solution’s innovative software, it could play a crucial role in enhancing buyer confidence in EVs while setting new standards for battery safety and performance in the automotive industry. As a result, EV safety will be prioritized once again.
