Kia has taken the wraps off its most powerful electric vehicle (EV) ever, the 2026 EV9 GT, at the Los Angeles Auto Show. This high-performance version of their award-winning electric three-row SUV promises to blend family practicality with sports acceleration.
The EV9 GT packs a great power upgrade over the current GT-Line model, with dual electric motors producing an estimated 501 horsepower – a 122 hp increase and arrives with a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.3 seconds. The powertrain combines a 160-kW front motor with a more powerful 270-kW rear motor, maintaining the vehicle’s all-wheel-drive capability.
The GT model also introduces several firsts for Kia’s SUV lineup, including an Electronically Controlled Suspension (ECS) and an electronic Limited Slip Differential. Drivers can select from multiple driving modes – Normal, Eco, Sport, and My Drive – each adjusting suspension damping, steering, and brake feel. A dedicated GT button on the steering wheel instantly activates the stiffest suspension setting for maximum performance.
In an interesting nod to traditional performance vehicles, Kia has equipped the EV9 GT with Virtual Gear Shift technology, which simulates the feeling and sound of gear changes through an artificial rev limit and accompanying soundtrack – despite the vehicle having no actual transmission.
The GT variant maintains the practical features that have made the EV9 popular, including 7.8 inches of ground clearance and 5,000 lbs towing capacity. It will also come standard with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, allowing access to Tesla’s Supercharger network when deliveries begin in the second half of 2025.
For its design, the GT sets itself apart with unique 21-inch wheels, green brake calipers, and sport seats with Alcantara inserts. The interior features GT-exclusive trim elements and a unique ambient lighting scheme displayed across its 12.3-inch touchscreen.
As pricing has not been announced, it is expected to exceed the current GT-Line’s $75,225 starting price. Unlike some EV9 models, the GT will be assembled in South Korea, making it ineligible for the $3,750 federal tax credit available to U.S.-built variants.
With the 2026 EV9 GT, it showcases Kia’s continued push into the performance EV segment, following the successful formula established by its smaller EV6 GT sibling while offering the practicality of a six-passenger SUV.
