Kia introduced the world’s first car accessory, which was made from plastic extracted from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), for its Kia EV3 electric vehicle (EV) as a limited-edition trunk liner.

Kia’s compact electric SUV, the EV3, has gained significant attention since its debut at Kia’s first annual EV Day last October. The model has quickly become a hit, with pre-orders in South Korea surpassing 10,000 units within just 23 days.
Priced at around $30,000 in South Korea and $40,000 in Europe, the EV3 offers affordability without compromising onperformance. The European version impresses with a range of up to 599 km (372 miles ), making it a competitive option in the electric SUV market.
A U.S. launch is anticipated by 2026, with estimated pricing between $30,000 to $35,000, positioning it as a budget-friendly choice for American buyers seeking to go electric.

According to Kia, the company is also showcasing its commitment to sustainability with a world-first accessory for the EV3, a new and eco-friendly trunk liner. This innovative liner is made with 40% recycled ocean plastic from the GPGP and features a unique “geometric wave” pattern inspired by ocean currents.

The liner includes a QR code, providing detailed information about its development and Kia’s partnership for this initiative. This accessory will be available in select markets as part of the EV3’s rollout, further highlighting Kia’s forward-thinking approach to environmentally conscious vehicle production.

Charles Ryu, Executive Vice President at Kia, emphasized the significance of this development stating, “As the first genuine Kia accessory made using reclaimed ocean plastic, we are proud to see tangible progress made toward creating a circular resource system for ocean plastic.”
Since 2022, Kia has been supporting The Ocean Cleanup’s mission to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. The partnership has already helped remove over one million pounds of plastic from the GPGP, which covers an estimated 1.6 million sq km, making it the largest floating waste patch. Notably, Kia has committed to a seven-year partnership with the organization.
Boyan Slat, Founder & CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, expressed gratitude for the collaboration stating, “We are so grateful to have a visionary and passionate partner in Kia, who shares our vision of ensuring that the plastic we extract from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is given a new life in sustainable items.”
Transforming ocean plastic into usable products comes with significant challenges. Unlike ocean-bound plastic, ocean plastic is more difficult to recycle due to its prolonged exposure to the elements, which degrades the material.
To ensure the material’s integrity, it must pass a rigorous Chain of Custody Standard, which verifies its traceability throughout the recycling process. Despite these hurdles, Kia has partnered with The Ocean Cleanup to successfully convert this challenging material into durable, practical products, like the EV3’s eco-friendly trunk liner, showcasing the potential of sustainable innovation.
The EV3 trunk liner is just one aspect of Kia’s larger commitment to sustainability. The company has set ambitious goals, aiming to incorporate over 20% sustainable materials in its vehicles by 2030. Several Kia models already utilize recycled materials, including the EV9, which features flooring made from recycled fishnets, and the EV6, which incorporates cloth and matting sourced from recycled plastics.
As Kia continues its transformation into a leading provider of electric mobility solutions, this innovative accessory serves as a tangible example of the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility. By turning ocean waste into high-quality automotive products, Kia is not only addressing the issue of plastic pollution but also setting a new standard for sustainability in the EV industry.
