Jeep has canceled its planned Gladiator 4xe plug-in hybrid, ending speculation that the midsize pickup would join the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe in the brand’s electrified lineup.

The decision comes as Stellantis scales back its EV ambitions in the pickup segment, citing weaker-than-expected demand for electrified trucks and a need to reassess product priorities.

Plug-in pickup no longer in Jeep’s future

The Gladiator 4xe had been positioned as a natural follow-up to the Wrangler 4xe, which remains one of Jeep’s best sellers. With this update, the Gladiator will remain powered exclusively by a 3.6L V6 engine producing 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Gladiator sales, however, have softened since a 2021 peak of nearly 90,000 units in the U.S., slipping to just over 42,000 last year. With that decline in mind, Jeep is redirecting investment toward new features and factory-backed customization options to maintain the truck’s appeal in the ICE segment, according to Automotive News.

Stellantis pivots electrification strategy

The cancellation is part of a wider Stellantis recalibration. The automaker recently dropped plans for a fully electric Ram 1500 in favor of a range-extended hybrid variant. Similarly, production challenges and tariff-related costs led to the discontinuation of the Dodge Charger Daytona R/T EV in Canada, according to GM Authority. In a statement, Stellantis said it is “reassessing its product strategy” as consumer demand for electrified pickups continues to evolve.

While Jeep won’t pursue a Gladiator hybrid, the company emphasized that it will continue investing in the model’s long-term growth. More customization choices, additional factory features, and potentially new powertrain options are expected in the coming years, even if electrification is not part of the near-term plan.
