In a significant achievement that underlines the automotive industry’s evolving safety standards in electric vehicles (EVs), Hyundai Motor Group has emerged as the leading manufacturer in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) 2024 safety awards.

Stricter IIHS Safety Standards for 2024

The company’s three brands – Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia – collectively secured 22 TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP) and TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) awards, representing an impressive 21 percent of all awards given this year.

The recognition comes at a time when IIHS has notably raised its safety requirements, introducing more stringent criteria that focus on enhanced protection for both vehicle occupants and pedestrians. A key change in the 2024 evaluation process includes an updated moderate front overlap test that now incorporates a second crash test dummy in the rear seat.

To qualify for these prestigious safety designations, vehicles must meet increasingly demanding criteria. TSP awards require Good ratings in small overlap front, original moderate overlap front, and updated side tests. The more stringent TSP+ designation demands additional Good ratings and at least an Acceptable rating in the updated moderate front crash test. Both awards now require acceptable or better ratings for pedestrian crash prevention systems and headlights across all trim levels.

Breaking down the Group’s remarkable performance from its EV lineup, Hyundai secured nine awards, positioning itself as the second-ranked global brand. Four of these were the coveted TSP+ designation with two being EVs, awarded to the IONIQ 5 and the IONIQ 6 models.

Genesis, the group’s luxury brand, demonstrated exceptional safety standards by earning eight awards, tying for third place with Honda and Mazda. Seven Genesis models achieved the prestigious TSP+ status, including the Electrified G80 and Electrified GV70. Furthermore, Kia rounded out the group’s success with five awards, including a TSP award for the EV9 model.

Brian Latouf, President and Global Chief Safety and Quality Officer at Hyundai Motor Group, emphasized the significance of these achievements stating, “The Group’s exceptional performance in the IIHS 2024 Top Safety awards is a testament to our unwavering focus on safety and continuous efforts to provide the highest level of protection for vehicle occupants and other road users.”

Hyundai Group’s Commitment to Safety

With Hyundai Motor Group’s dominant performance in these awards, it demonstrates its successful adaptation to these evolving safety standards and its commitment to incorporating advanced safety features across its entire vehicle lineup.

As a result, this breadth of success suggests that Hyundai Motor Group has successfully integrated its safety philosophy across all its brands and vehicle platforms, setting a benchmark for the automotive industry and EV market.
